A Verse For Courage by October 17, 2014 Dr. Craig Etheredge

Good Morning! We’re talking about Craig’s List, the verses that meant the most to me in my life.

Let me give you another one.  This one is a verse of courage!  I don’t know if you ever need courage and strength, but I remember as a young pastor I was leading a church and there needed to be some changes made.  I knew what needed to be done.  I felt like God had clearly given me a directive to do it, but honestly, I was nervous about it.  I was a young leader.  I was afraid of the future.  What if it fails?  What if people resist it?  What if I get out there and it blows up in my face?  I was just nervous about it, and I remember telling the Lord, I’m nervous about this decision.  I think I know what you want, but I’m just afraid about what’s going to happen.

This is a verse he gave me.  Joshua 1:9, Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous.  Do not be afraid.  Do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Boy!  That was like a surge of courage!  It was like a surge of adrenaline for me!  He said, Hey Craig, have I not already talked to you about this?  You know what you need to do.  You know what’s right.

Now listen, be strong and courageous!  Then he says, don’t be afraid and don’t be discouraged.  I think fear and discouragement are the two things that often keep us from doing what God wants us to do.  You may be facing that right now – Man!  I want to do that, but I’m afraid of what might happen, or I’m discouraged by the people around me or my circumstances, so I don’t step forward.

Listen, be strong and courageous! Life is short; we’ve got to live it now.  So do it full-on for God.  Be strong and courageous.  Don’t be afraid and don’t be discouraged.  Why, because God is with you wherever you go.
